Clear rainwater downpipes and restore drainage
A blocked rainwater downpipe can cause water to overflow rather than reach the drain below. Blockage Busters investigates blocked downpipes and the drainage connections they discharge into.
Signs of a blocked downpipe
Overflow during rainfall, water escaping at a joint or a gully filling beneath the downpipe can indicate a restriction. The problem may be in the vertical pipe, its lower bend or the connected underground drainage.
Leaves, debris and restricted outlets
Leaves and other debris can collect in rainwater pipes and bends. A blocked gully or drain below can also prevent discharge even when the downpipe itself is clear. Checking the whole accessible route helps locate the cause.
How we approach the blockage
We inspect the accessible pipe and outlet and choose a clearing method suited to the installation. Where the restriction is underground, drain cleaning or a CCTV inspection may be appropriate. Safe access and the height of the pipe affect what can be done.
Downpipe clearance and gutter work
Let us know the height of the downpipe and whether the gutters are also overflowing. We will confirm the work and access requirements before arranging a visit. Clearing the pipe will not repair a damaged roof or defective guttering.
Reduce repeat blockages
Keep accessible ground-level gullies clear of loose debris and arrange appropriate maintenance where leaves regularly collect. If water continues to overflow after cleaning, further investigation may be needed.
Areas we cover
Our drainage team serves London, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Send your town and postcode so we can confirm availability for your property.
Observe overflow safely from ground level
Describe where water escapes during ordinary rainfall: at the gutter, a downpipe joint or the ground-level gully. Safe photographs from ground level can help explain the symptoms. Do not climb onto a roof or use a ladder to investigate an overflowing pipe. Mention whether wastewater also backs up from nearby fixtures, because rainwater and foul drainage need to be distinguished during assessment. Ask what access arrangements are included and whether investigation of the underground outlet is a separate part of the quote.
